Netbackup Master server hardware - Solaris

Post Netbackup Master server hardware - Solaris
good morning,

I am Interested in asking the community thier opinions for what hardware platform works best for master only netbackup servers.

We currently are running our master in a master media configuration (with two additional media servers) and it is time to refresh the master server hardware.

I am going to be performing some tests to benchmark some of the hardware we may use for a replacement master only server. for this i am also interested in some of the tests i can run to give an indication of the server performance.
I was thinking of restoing the catalogue to the test hardware and timing some of the more intensive commands such as bpimmedia and bplist. does anybody have other or perhaps even better suggestions ?.

I'll post results as i complete tests tests if anybody is interested.

At the moment it looks like i'll get to test the Sun M300, T5220 and one of the new Intel Nehalem systems.

Thanks

Adam M.

I have had both windows and AIX masters.

I like AIX better (could be some favoritism here as I am an AIX admin), I boot the server less often. Had to boot the windows master a little more then I liked.

Our NBU master used to be on a Sun SPARC V490 running Solaris 9. Very solid but also pretty costly. When we found a better use for the V490 we looked around and finally settled with an HP DL385G2 running Solaris 10 x86 with 4GB of memory. The server is actually faster than the older SPARC box and we haven’t had any reliability issues. We did manage to get the same HP box to run NBU on Linux using Fedora core but this was not an approved configuration and gave us no end of trouble. When Veritas finally approved configurations running Solaris on X86 we jumped on it and haven’t looked back since !!

There’s a white paper out there when Sun was using a T5220 as a media server streaming to about 6-8 StorageTek 10000 drives. When we refreshed our NetBackup infrastructure in one location, we did something very similar to this where I have a T5220 as a media server streaming to 6 LTO-4 FC drives in our SL500 library. I couldn’t be happier with the performance to be honest, this setup flies!

Your biggest performance upgrade though might come from moving your master server off to dedicated hardware and let the master/media server be strictly a media server. Right now my master server is running on an older SunFire v480 and it couldn’t be happier.

T2000's also work well as media and master servers.

We have a T2000 master server and a T2000 media server.

We also have a V240 as a media server, because our LTO1's and the L700 require
HVD SCSI...and we weren't able to get a working controller for the T2000's.

T2000's have fibre attached LTO3's and SAN (6140) storage. (D2D2T)

LTO3's are the daily/catalog/dr tapes, LTO1's are permanent archive (the units
that wanted such archives and didn't want to pay for tapes, get the old LTO1's
until they are gone...or all the old LTO1 drives fail)

The windows group also has a windows machine as a media server, because it
makes it easier to manage their clients.

At least our Sun boxes mount inside the L700 (along with fibre switches)
now....before it was 880 (that had trouble keeping up ... especially on the
weeks that we do fulls)
